Osaka Adventure Activities: The Best Things to do in Osaka

Discover the best things to do in Osaka – these are the activities you do not want to miss.

Osaka, Japan’s vibrant metropolis and culinary capital, is Tokyo’s cooler, edgier sibling.

The city boasts much of the charm found in Japan’s capital, with the added bonus of fewer crowds and more affordable prices.

There’s also plenty to see and do in Osaka. From bustling street markets and historic landmarks to beautiful parks and exciting day trips, it’s no wonder that Osaka is one of our favourite cities in the world.

The Best Things to do in Osaka

Seek Thrills at Universal Studios Japan

super nintendo world, universal studios japan

We’re BIG theme park enthusiasts, so we might be biased, but we think that Universal Studios Japan is one of the best places to visit in Osaka. With ten themed areas, including a magical Wizarding World, you can enjoy a mix of big thrill rides and family attractions.

Plus, with the recent addition of Super Nintendo World, there’s plenty to keep you entertained for a day (or two, we think.) Make sure you head to this land first thing in the morning to beat the huge crowds and snag a ride on Mario Kart IRL.

Go Kart Around the City

Go Karting through the streets of Tokyo

It might be a little bit cliche, but taking to Osaka’s neon streets in a go-kart is a fun way to explore. We were nervous to strap ourselves into the driver’s seat, but it turned out to be an incredible experience.

Look out for the famous landmarks Osaka has to offer as you zoom through the city, from the majestic Osaka Castle to the vibrant Dotonbori district. Opt for a late-night slot to get the most out of this activity with an illuminated backdrop.

Enjoy the Views From Osaka Castle

osaka castle

We’ll make a bold statement – Osaka Castle is one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited. This iconic landmark, once the largest castle in Japan, boasts a rich history that stretches back to the 16th century.

We recommend you climb the keep for panoramic city views or explore the fascinating museum inside the castle. Give yourself plenty of time to wander around the surrounding park (we could’ve spent hours there,) especially during cherry blossom season.

Eat Your Way Around Dotonbori

dotonbori, osaka

If you’re a foodie, you have to adventure around the iconic Dotonbori street. There’s no better way to refuel after a busy day in Osaka. Eating takoyaki, deep fried octopus, is a must-do. Our favourite spot is Takoyaki Kukuru Dotonbori, but there are so many places along the road that you won’t go too far wrong.

Heading to Chibo Okonomiyaki Restaurant for a delicious savoury pancake is another highlight. But, to be honest, we recommend just exploring the streets and trying a little bit of everything. Go hungry.

Head to Minoh Park

minoh park near osaka

Craving an escape from Osaka’s neon jungle? We were amazed by Minoh Park, a scenic haven just a 30-minute train ride away. This forested valley offers a refreshing dose of nature and plenty of hiking trails for those after an adventure.

The star attraction is the mighty Minoo Waterfall, a 33-metre cascade that roars to life amidst the lush foliage. Nearby, discover hidden gems like the charming Rokkaku-do pavilion, a traditional teahouse, and the intriguing Minoo Insectarium.

Stroll Through the TeamLab Botanical Garden at Night

teamlabs, osaka

Spending an evening at the TeamLab Botanical Garden is one of our favourite things to do in Osaka. The experience allows you to wander through a beautiful leafy space filled with vivid photo opportunities.

When night falls, the botanical gardens come alive with colourful projections and immersive sounds. Book a later slot to take advantage of the dark – we recommend you purchase your tickets in advance as the TeamLAB Botanic Garden sells out very quickly.

Take a Nara Day Trip

Close up shot of one of the deers in Nara, Japan

Visiting Nara was one of the most magical things we experienced in Japan. There’s plenty to fill up a day trip here, such as seeing Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Grand Shrine, but most famous of all is Nara Deer Park.

This is where hundreds of adorable (and cheeky) deer roam free amongst the residents. You can purchase crackers and feed them, or simply observe them as they wander around.

Admire the View From the Abeno Harukas 300 Observatory

abeno harukas 300 observatory, osaka

Fancy experiencing the best view in Osaka? We thought so. Rising 300 metres above ground, the Harukas 300 observation deck stands as one of the tallest buildings in Japan. It’s home to an impressive 360-degree viewing platform, which allows you to gaze out over the city’s iconic landmarks, such as Osaka Castle and Tsutenkaku Tower.

We recommend you book a ticket in advance, just to be safe, as the viewing platform can get busy during weekends and holidays.

Take a Uratomi Coast Cruise, Tottori Sand Dunes & Dunes and Sand Museum Day Tour

tottori sand dunes

Did you know Japan has a desert? That’s right. Nestled along the rugged coastline near Osaka, the Uratomi Coastline is a little bit of a hidden gem. This Uratomi Coast Cruise allows you to see plenty of the  UNESCO-recognised area in just one day.

The tour features breathtaking vistas, cultural discoveries, and unforgettable experiences.

Not to mention a visit to the renowned Sand Museum. The best time to visit this region is during the late summer to autumn months, where you can indulge in a quintessentially Japanese experience – pear picking.

Take a Day Trip to Amanohashidate & Ine Funaya

day trip to amanohasidate from osaka

Just a stone’s throw away from Osaka is a destination straight out of a fairy tale: Amanohashidate. Amanohashidate is known for its sandbar that stretches across the sea like a bridge, earning it the poetic moniker, “the bridge to the sky.” For the best views, we urge you to hop aboard the cable car that ascends to the hilltop observation deck.

Nearby lies the charming seaside village of Ine, famous for its quaint wooden houses that line the waterfront. There’s not much to do here, but it’s incredibly beautiful. Booking a day trip in advance is the best way to experience both Amanohashidate and Ine Funaya.

Explore the City by Bicycle

cycling, osaka

We were so surprised by how many people cycled in Japan, but it makes sense considering Osaka is a very cycle-friendly city. Bicycle rental spots are all over the city, with the HUBchari bikes the most common.

Once you’ve picked up a bicycle, make sure you spend plenty of time navigating Osaka’s bustling streets and serene neighbourhoods. If you’re after a taste of history and culture, we recommend biking through the quaint streets of Shinsekai and Tennoji, where you can spot ancient temples and historic landmarks.

Make Your Own Noodles at the CupNoodles Museum

cup noodles museum, osaka

When in Japan, it’s likely that you’re going to be chowing down on a LOT of noodles (we have to admit that we spent an embarrassing amount of time in Ichiran) But, if you fancy making your own bowl of delicious noodle goodness, you need to hit up the CupNoodles Museum

This popular attraction involves learning a little bit more about the founder of Nissin Foods before heading to the Noodle factory to make your own. Choose your soup and toppings, and take home a delicious souvenir. This might not be an adventure activity, but we promise you cannot miss this experience when in Japan.

Go Rock Climbing

rock climbing

Have we mentioned that Osaka is ridiculously cool? If not, one look at its rock climbing scene cements that. There are so many rock climbing gyms all over the city – many of which feature state of the art walls – but the best place to go is Roca.

This gym specialises in bouldering and is one of the best in Japan. Whether you’re a total newbie or an experienced climber, the friendly staff and top level equipment make this one of the best things to do in Osaka.

Where to Stay in Osaka

Tsutenkaku Tower in Osaka, Japan - adventure destinations

Osaka is well served by public transport, so there are plenty of great areas to stay in. That said, Honmachi (centre) and Minami (the main shopping area near Dotonbori) are our top picks. Staying near one of the main train stations is also ideal if you want to take day trips to Nara Deer Park or Kyoto.
